Thien Thien Chicken Rice – Brunei

Thien Thien has been around for as long as I remember eating Hainan Chicken Rice. For most Bruneians like me, living overseas – this would be a constant craving and it seems like no other place could ever top it. Some say it is because of the signature chili sauce, some think it is the soy sauce & sesame oil sauce while others think it is the rice.

For me it is more for nostalgia. Some things are just meant to always be eaten when back home for a visit and this is one of them.

Note: Meep doesn’t get the fascination because he likes the chicken rice that is more flavourful AND the restaurant is always insanely hot and stuffy because they don’t have airconditioning.

They offer more items than what is on their menu, but these are the popular items:

Here is what we always order:

Rice

The rice is one of their “own”. Nothing beats Thien Thien rice. Always very subtly seasoned with chicken stock. Not as garlicky as some places but very simple and always perfectly cooked rice. The sauce that comes with the chicken makes a huge difference when mixed into the rice.

Steamed Chicken Breasts $3.20

The chicken breasts is always moist, whether it is the roast chicken or steamed; it is good. But nothing hits the spot like the juicy greasy chicken legs/thigh.

.

Steamed Chicken Thigh $3.20

I always pay the premium for chicken drumsticks and if they are out, the thighs would cut it. Their dark meat is very juicy and smooth with nice silky fatty skin. All the chicken sits on silvers of crisp cucumbers and smothered in their in house made soy sauce & sesame oil mix.

.

Chili

The chili is another signature item. No other place has the same chili sauce – it is a little sweet, barely spicy an tangy. Flavoured with hints of garlic and shallots.

A lot of my dining partners are all about the chili sauce and this is how they would eat it. Me? Not so much…

.

Laksa $2.50

I never used to order the laksa but my sister does so I finally tried it. The laksa taste mostly of coconut milk and doesn’t have much “tamarind” flavour. It is shrimpy and rich. A little sweet but nothing a good squeeze of Kasturi lime can’t fix. Comes with slivers of fish cake, a couple shrimps and chicken strips. Noodles are a mix of yellow noodles and mee hoon (rice noodles).

Take out

I love thien thien take out. For some reason, something about the chicken rice wrapped in plastic and paper – steaming in its own sauce and fats makes it taste so much better. The rice does get a little more soft than when eating in the restaurant.

Total Damage: Under $5 per person

Personal Rating: 3.75 out of 5 (Pretty Darn Good)

My husband grew up in Brunei and he really loves Thien Thien’s chicken rice. He misses it so much. Yesterday we tried a Malay resto here in Vancouver Canada and for my hubby nothing beats Thien Thien.
