Hing Nam Foong – Brunei

Hing Nam Fong is another popular late night restaurant – it serves everything from kwae chap, kolomee, mee goreng (the Indomie instant noodle) with eggs, wontons and even canned meats! This place is popularly known as “Kwae Chap” to locals.

.

Kwae Chap! A dark herbal soup with all kinds of  parts of a pig – intestines, liver, stomach & pork slices; the soup is served with nice noodles that are flat or rolled up (I don’t know how else to describe it), deep fried tofu and egg. Not a lot of places serve kwae chap, and this is one that has been around for decades.

I am not a fan of “unwanted” pig parts aka offal. I just rather have it what they call Kosong (soup & noodle only) with fishballs. I get the oddest look from everyone when I request for fishballs but I like it~

D (ex roomie) loves this place as much as I do, but she likes the chewy parts, tofu, and fishball in her kwae chap

The soup is always really dark and gives off a nice herbal aroma (a lot like Bak Kut Teh). It is consistently lightly salted but very flavourful (full bodied). But definitely an acquired taste~

.

I don’t really know the actual prices of anything in this restaurant, the bill is always so cheap that we never really asked. Typically a bowl with nothing but noodles go for about $2.50 and then you can have everything in it or request for specific “parts” and it goes up to a maximum of $3.50.

.

Other than this popular kwae chap, my friends also like their:

Kolomee w Char Siew & Wonton

I used to love the kolomee here when they used to have these awesome flat noodles (mee pok) & deep fried fish cake/balls. Now they only have the regular fishballs.

The wonton is not very good. Always very very salty and the skin is a little on the thick side with only a tiny penny size piece of filling. The char siew is dry and sliced very thin. The kolo mee itself is just ok but always a little dry. I still prefer their mee pok to this regular mee.

.

Oddest part about this place is that they prepare perfect instant/canned food! After a few rounds of drinks, we usually like coming here for their salty tasty canned items and instant noodles cooked w egg (Great drunk ppl food). I never did find out how much they charge us for them though.

Mee goreng (Indomie) fried w egg

Mee goreng (Indomie) w sunny side up egg

The mee goreng is always a little al dente and tossed in package mix so well that it completely coats every strand. Delicious! How can you go wrong w Indomie~

(It does get a little greasy after half, so best to share!)

.

Deep fried luncheon meat - They managed to fry it so well that the outside is perfectly crispy and soft in the middle. You order it by telling them if you want half a can or a whole can. LOL

.

Fried canned spicy pork cubes with eggs - This is just the canned meat fried with some scrambled eggs. Always salty and delicious. I never asked them what brand they use though.

Total Damage : Under BND$5/person (including drinks)

Personal Rating: 3.75 out of 5 (Very good)

Where else can you get awesome kueh chap? Not a single place comes to mind… I come back here every trip back home and the soup has always stayed consistently good. The prices are cheap and portions are decent. Oh oh and of course they open late!!
