Great Eastern Restaurant – San Francisco, CA

When the in-laws came for a visit, we decided to go to SF for the day. I utilised Yelp in finding a good dim sum restaurant that is close to Chinatown. I noticed there was an insane amount of dim sum take out all over Chinatown with cheap prices. About $1.20-$1.50 per order of 3 pieces. But we wanted an actual seating restaurant.

.

So Great Eastern it is! The prices were reasonable, a lot cheaper than what we are used to paying in San Jose, Palo Alto or even in Vancouver. It was busy, but they had a basement and main floor so the wait wasn’t as bad. There were about 8 parties before us, and we only waited about half hour for a table.

great eastern

Small dishes were $2.60, Medium was $3.30 and large was $3.70. They have chef special’s as well; which were a little overpriced. We got some Gailan and it was $9.50 for a small plate!!!!  Other than the shocking price of the veggies, everything else was GOOD

We ordered

3 orders of siu mai. These were good but I think it takes a lot of effort to really screw this up. Not as much shrimp as some places but for $2.60, i won’t complain~

.

DSCF38281 order of har gaw. $3.30. Meep took a piece before I could take a picture

.

DSCF38292 orders of black bean spare ribs @ $3.30- Nothing exciting. But tender n nummyyy

.

deep fried dumplingDeep fried minced meat turnover $2.60. This was pretty good! The dough was really soft and chewy with crispy outside.

.

DSCF3830Chicken feet $2.60- as good as it gets~

.

DSCF3826DSCF3827Egg tarts $2.60 – Man… THESE WERE GOOD! They came in mini sizes (look! the size of a siu mai). They came out hot n flaky. One of the best  I have had. I ate 3, left one for mom-in-law and was tempted to order another…

Shrimp rice roll $3.30 – This i liked. Normally I am not a big fan of cheong fan coz some places make it a little too thick. This was thin and silky! yum….

Some fried rice that was being brought around. It was not bad but nothing exciting. I think this was over $8.

.

Also ordered beef tripe (which I heard was bland but I did not try any); Gailan/chinese broccoli (which was really good but overpriced) and a coke ($3 for a coke!!!!)

.

But the total damage was still reasonable (considering the rice dish, veg n coke was about $23). The total bill came up to $63.80 for 4 stuffed happy people~ WAIT… Did I mention they did not have carts? But there are picture menus.. ^o^ we knew what we wanted so we did not need it. We just filled out a sheet of what we wanted then food just kept on coming~
Personal rating – 3.75 out of 5 ( very good to great food)
