Cafe 21 – San Diego, CA

I fell in love with the place the moment I set eyes on the exterior.

Everything about this place is super quaint and had the cozy ambiance that I think every Brunch place should have. On a lazy Sunday, right before we head to Seaworld then the airport – I found the perfect spot for some breakfast (and the bonus is that is it only a 5 minute walk from our hotel in Gaslamp)

One of their specialties are the home made Sangria of all kinds; it was a tad too early for me to try some but I wish I did!!!

Menu is a simple one pager – lotsa brunch items and some salads & sandwiches.

We ordered:

Azeri Style Strawberry French Toast $9

Homemade egg battered bread filled with organic local strawberries and sweet cream cheese filling.

It looked pretty amazing but it was not as good as I expected. Mind you, it is still tasty but the bread was not soft or eggy, it was pretty hard and crusty. The fresh strawberries and cream cheese filling was delicious but the bread still needed more moisture.

Lamb Sausage Omelet $14

Omelet with lamb sausage, bell peppers, Goat cheese, tomato and Mozzarella and served with house toast and one side (I picked the Potato Pancakes.

I enjoyed this a lot but Meep was not crazy about it. I loved the generous chunks of lamb sausage that were gamey and seasoned so well. The goat cheese and soft airy eggs (definitely left to cook in the oven so it poofs up) and sweet slightly crunchy bell peppers gave the dish a nice contrast of textures and taste.

I didn’t care much for the potatoe pancakes; they just tasted like shredded potatoes mushed together to create their version of a hashbrown but it was pretty bland n blah…

Coffee $3
Large Orange Juice $4

Total Damage: $38 (including tax & tip)

Personal Rating: 3.25 out of 5 (Good)

The food was good, prices were reasonable for the quality of the dishes but service was a tad lacking. When we went, there were only 3 tables dining but we still rarely saw our server. I drink A LOT of coffee first thing in the morning and it was pretty challenging trying to get anyone’s attention to get me a refill. It took even longer for us to get our bill. The service was pretty much non existent other than when our menus were given and orders taken.
